IVF Tips: How to Cope with the 'Two-Week Wait'

The ‘two-week wait’ is a hot topic on any IVF and TTC forum – it’s the 14-day window before you can take your pregnancy test.

During this time thoughts of pregnancy are all-consuming, making it hard to carry on ‘as normal’.

Here are some tips from our fertility support midwife, Lynsey Moorhead, on how to cope:

Don’t try to avoid it:You’ll be looking for the slightest pregnancy signs and worrying over every twinge. So it’s unrealistic to put pressure on yourself to not think about it. Remember there’s nothing you can do now – try to relax!

Get advice and help:At Manchester Fertility you have a great support team here to help you. We’ve helped thousands of couples through the two-week wait. We know how you feel, and you’re not alone. We can often put your mind at rest straight away.

Stick to your normal routine:Don’t do anything differently unless you’ve been told to. There’s no need to completely rest for two weeks or avoid any physical activity. But do listen to your body. If you’re tired, rest.

Try to be patient:We know how tempting it is to do a pregnancy test earlier than advised but this can often cause more worry because you can’t trust the accuracy of the result. If you test early and it’s negative, you’ll do another one again at the right time in case the result changes. If it’s positive, you’ll do another one as well, just to be sure. All this causes is extra anxiety!
