IVF - transfer day

We will be attending for tests and to meet the consultant in a few weeks time.
I have a question please if you can help. Do you have a policy or restrictions on numbers of embryos that can be transferred? Is the choice our own? Thank you

Our Expert's Answer

This information was published 3 years, 2 months ago and was correct at the time of publication. It may not reflect our current practices or regulations.

Please note that all the answers we give are on a generic basis only, as we cannot provide more in-depth answers without access to your medical history. If you need a more detailed response, tailored to you, we would recommend a consultation with one of our Fertility Specialists for more comprehensive medical advice.

The number of embryos to transfer are based on the regulations in the UK, a patients age and embryo quality.  If you are young and it is your first treatment we would strongly advise you to have a single embryo transferred.  If you have had a previous cycle and are under 40 you may be able to have 2 embryos transferred.  It is not possible to transfer more than 2 embryos unless you are over 40 and then we would only ever transfer 3 in exceptional circumstances.
