Head of Laboratory

Dr Helen Hunter

As our Head of Laboratory, Helen supervises our expert embryology team and oversees the day-to-day running of our state-of-the-art facilities.

In 2024, Helen completed the Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) programme to become a Doctor of Clinical Science, DClinSci, the highest qualification a Clinical Scientist can achieve. As part of her Doctorate, Helen is now a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.

Helen's earlier experience began at Bradford University, where she obtained a BSc in Biomedical Science. She then received her MSc at the University of Manchester, where researching how embryos attach to the lining of the womb sparked her interest in Embryology.

Following this, Helen began her career in clinical embryology in Leeds and returned to Manchester after a few years to work for St Mary's Hospital. She remained at St Mary's for almost 25 years as Principal Embryologist and Deputy Lab Manager before joining Manchester Fertility in April 2023.

She is also involved in training and teaching Reproductive Scientists on the Scientist Training Programme (STP) and is the lead examiner for Embryology. She assesses Embryologists for State Registration and is committed to maintaining high professional training standards.

We are delighted to have Helen leading our team of exceptional scientists. She brings with her extensive scientific research and leadership experience to Manchester Fertility.

Helen says:

I have been lucky to have found a career that is so rewarding. I've seen so many improvements in treatments and success rates, and it has always been an honour to help people become parents over the years. I'm looking forward to leading the amazing Laboratory Teams at Manchester Fertility, helping them to develop their talents and continue to provide our patients with high standards of scientific services.
