Head of Laboratory

Helen Hunter

As our Head of Laboratory, Helen supervises our expert embryology team and oversees the day-to-day running of our state-of-the-art facilities.

As a student, Helen obtained a BSc in Biomedical Science from Bradford University and her MSc at the University of Manchester, where researching how embryos attach to the lining of the womb sparked her interest in Embryology.

Helen began her career in clinical embryology in Leeds and returned to Manchester after a few years to work for St Mary's Hospital. She remained at St Mary's for almost 25 years as Principal Embryologist and Deputy Lab Manager before joining Manchester Fertility in April 2023.

Helen is close to completing the 'Higher Specialist Scientist Training' (HSST) programme, the highest qualification a Clinical Scientist can achieve; upon completion, this will lead to her acquiring fellowship status with the Royal College of Pathologists.

She is also involved in training and teaching Reproductive Scientists on the Scientist Training Programme (STP) and is the lead examiner for Embryology. She assesses Embryologists for State Registration and is very committed to maintaining high professional training standards.

Helen is looking forward to this new chapter in her career and bringing her extensive scientific, research and leadership experience to Manchester Fertility.

Helen says:

I have been lucky to have found a career that is so rewarding. I've seen so many improvements in treatments and success rates, and it has always been an honour to help people become parents over the years. I'm looking forward to leading the amazing Laboratory Teams at Manchester Fertility, helping them to develop their talents and continue to provide our patients with high standards of scientific services.
