If you want reassurance regarding your fertility, it might be time to investigate your fertility health in more detail with fertility testing. Whether you’re planning to start a family or experiencing difficulties growing your family due to secondary infertility, early testing can provide clarity and reassurance.
At Manchester Fertility, we offer a range of testing packages designed to meet the individual needs of our patients and support every stage of the fertility journey.
What is a Fertility Test?
A fertility test helps assess your overall reproductive health and your chances of conceiving, either naturally or with treatment. Our female fertility assessment package provides a comprehensive evaluation of fertility health using a combination of a blood test, ultrasound scans, BMI and blood pressure checks.
Fertility assessments are particularly helpful for individuals or couples who are ready to start or grow their family, but they can also offer valuable insight if you are still in the early stages of family planning.
In addition to standard fertility assessments, we also offer specialist fertility tests, which may be recommended as a follow-up to your initial fertility assessment, or arranged individually if you have results from another clinic. Our new patient team can help schedule the exact tests you need.
What to Expect During Fertility Testing
Our female fertility assessment package (£390) includes five key components designed to give a clear and detailed overview of your fertility health.
AMH Blood Test
An AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) test measures the hormone produced in your follicles and will indicate your ovarian reserve (remaining egg supply). The test can be done at any time during your menstrual cycle.
AMH levels are measured in picomoles per litre. While the numbers can be confusing, our specialists will explain what is considered normal for your age group. You can also find more information about AMH on our blog.
As part of the fertility treatment cycle, your AMH helps determine response to ovarian stimulation and suitable protocols. If your AMH result is higher than the normal range, it might suggest the presence of PCOS, which means we would need to tailor treatment to prevent overstimulation. AMH can also indicate your chances of conceiving without treatment; a low AMH doesn't prevent natural conception but suggests trying for a baby sooner.
Pelvic Ultrasound Scan
Your ultrasound scan is performed transvaginally by our experienced and highly trained sonographers, allowing us to clearly assess your ovaries and womb. The scan can usually take place at any point in your menstrual cycle, as long as you are not actively menstruating. This approach provides the most detailed view of your pelvic structures, helping us build a clearer picture of your fertility health.
Antral Follicle Count (AFC)
An antral follicle count measures the number of small fluid-filled sacs in your ovaries that have the potential to develop into mature eggs. Conducted via a transvaginal ultrasound early in your menstrual cycle, AFC is used alongside AMH results to assess ovarian reserve and predict response to fertility treatment.
During this scan, we also assess the uterus and ovarian size to build a complete picture of your fertility health.
General Health Check
Your fertility assessment includes key general health checks, including your BMI, blood pressure, height, and weight. At Manchester Fertility, patients are required to have a BMI between 18 and 35 to begin treatment, as this range improves safety and increases the likelihood of successful conception.
This health check will also involve monitoring your blood pressure, which can affect hormonal balance, ovulation, and reproductive health.
50 Minute Fertility Consultation
Your assessment concludes with a 50-minute consultation with one of our fertility experts. During this appointment, your results will be explained in detail, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your next steps, including further testing, treatment options, or lifestyle recommendations.
After this detailed analysis of the results and an understanding of your circumstances, our consultants can recommend the best course of action to support your fertility journey.
When Should You Get Fertility Testing?
Most couples will conceive within 12 months of trying, which is why national guidelines recommend fertility testing after one year of unsuccessful attempts. However, if you have a known medical condition, irregular cycles, or concerns about fertility, earlier testing may be beneficial.
There is no “right” or “wrong” time to have a fertility test - many people choose testing earlier to make informed decisions about their fertility future.
