Fertility consultation

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is one of the most common and least complicated fertility treatments available for patients who need assistance to start or grow their families. To help you understand what to expect, we’ve compiled answers to your most common questions.

What is Intrauterine Insemination?

Intrauterine insemination, often shortened to IUI, is a fertility treatment that involves placing prepared sperm directly into the uterus. IUI can be performed with sperm from a partner or a donor. By using a thin, flexible catheter to place the sperm closer to the egg, IUI increases the chances of fertilisation.

What medication will I need to prepare for IUI?

IUI is generally performed without the use of fertility medications, this would be referred to as an unstimulated cycle. In some cases, medications may be prescribed to stimulate ovulation and increase the number of eggs available for fertilisation. During your consultation, our doctors will advise if medication would benefit you in your individual treatment journey.

Why might I need IUI treatment?

IUI may be advised if:

  • You have ovulation problems – IUI can be paired with fertility medications to enhance egg production.
  • You have unexplained infertility - When no clear cause of infertility is identified, IUI offers a less invasive first step.
  • You are using donor sperm
  • Your partner has previously frozen his sperm

For IUI to be successful, there must be enough healthy, motile sperm available, and open fallopian tubes with no blockages. If not, IVF may be a more suitable course of treatment.

How long does Intrauterine Insemination take?

A typical IUI cycle takes around four weeks, roughly the same length as a regular menstrual cycle. This includes everything from pinpointing ovulation to a pregnancy test.

The IUI procedure itself usually takes no more than 10 minutes, and you can go home after a short rest. Our ward nurses will help you after your procedure and can answer any questions you have at this time.

Is the IUI process painful?

The IUI process is not usually painful. The procedure uses the same speculum as a smear test, so generally if you have tolerated a smear test well, then you shouldn't have any problems with IUI.

Before your first IUI treatment, our nurses will discuss your previous medical experience, i.e if you’ve any internal examinations and how you found them, to make sure you are as comfortable as possible before the procedure. It may be a bit uncomfortable, and it’s normal if you experience some cramping for a short time after.

Can the sperm fall out?

No, once the sperm is injected into the uterus, it cannot fall out. During the procedure the catheter used loosens mucus in the cervix, so you might notice a bit of extra moisture afterward, this is entirely normal and unrelated to the sperm.

What are my chances of success with IUI?

IUI success rates can vary based on factors such as age, overall health, and the underlying cause of infertility. At Manchester Fertility, we have consistent success rates, helping you achieve your dream of having a family.
