A blood test will check your Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) level.  Your AMH provides a good indication of the number of eggs you have remaining, also known as your ovarian reserve. Your AMH test can be performed at any time in your menstrual cycle.

If your AMH is low, it does not mean that you cannot conceive naturally. However, it may be advisable to consider trying for a baby sooner rather than later. For IVF, your AMH tells us how you may respond to ovarian stimulation and the best protocol to use to ensure you have eggs for treatment.

We perform an ultrasound scan of your womb to check your ovaries and uterus to ensure that there are no cysts, fibroids or polyps that could impact your chance of conceiving, as well as to evaluate your antral follicle count to assess your ovarian reserve.

An ultrasound scan is painless and gives us accurate and highly detailed information about your reproductive health. The ideal time to have an ultrasound scan is when you are not actively bleeding; this ensures that our sonographers have visualisation of the uterine cavity.

We conduct an antral follicle count via a transvaginal ultrasound early in the menstrual cycle. This antral follicle count assesses your ovarian reserve and predicts your response to fertility treatments.

We measure your height and weight to calculate your BMI. A BMI that is too high or too low can affect your fertility and reduce your chance of getting pregnant. The BMI limit for fertility treatment at Manchester Fertility is 35. We will advise you on whether to raise or lower your BMI to improve your chances of conception. 

We will monitor your blood pressure as it can impact hormonal balance, ovulation, and overall reproductive health. High blood pressure can lead to pregnancy complications, emphasising the need for regular monitoring and lifestyle management, such as a balanced diet and exercise.

We will perform a comprehensive semen analysis using a sample of your sperm to assess its fertility potential. This includes evaluating your sperm count, shape (morphology), movement (motility), semen volume, and pH levels (which can indicate potential infections or hormonal imbalances).

Each of these factors plays a crucial role in determining sperm health and the ability to conceive.
