Early pregnancy scans - giving you the reassurance you need

Find out about our pregnancy reassurance scans, and how they can help put your mind at rest.

At Manchester Fertility, we offer an outstanding level of care through-out your pregnancy journey. Our private early pregnancy scans can give you the reassurance that you need, as early as possible.

Our friendly, expert team of sonographers – Anne and Becky provide two types of early pregnancy scans: early reassurance scans for women 7-10 weeks pregnant and reassurance scans for women 10-17 weeks pregnant, providing peace of mind in these early stages.

Early pregnancy scan - 7-10 weeks pregnant

Scan of an early baby between 7-10 weeks

What is an early pregnancy scan?

An early pregnancy scan offers reassurance in the early stages of pregnancy. You can have an early reassurance scan between 7 to 10 weeks into the gestation period, providing comfort and reassurance at this crucial and exciting time.

Why have an early pregnancy scan?

An early pregnancy scan can help ease any worries you might have about your pregnancy. It enables you to:

  • Confirm that your pregnancy is intrauterine
  • Check for single or multiple pregnancies
  • Check for baby’s heartbeat
  • Measure your baby to check progress

You’ll also receive a scan report and printouts of your baby’s scan.

Reassurance scan - 10-17 weeks pregnant

Scan of a baby at 12 weeks

What is a reassurance scan?

A reassurance scan provides additional peace of mind for expectant parents between 10 and 17 weeks pregnant. Reassurance scans can confirm the viability of the pregnancy and, from 16 weeks onwards, determine the sex of your baby, if possible. These scans are performed on the tummy and patients are asked to attend with a full bladder.

Why have a reassurance scan?

If you’re between 10 and 17 weeks pregnant, a reassurance scan can provide peace of mind about your pregnancy’s progression. Reasons for having a reassurance scan include:

  • Check the baby's heartbeat
  • Monitor the baby’s growth and development

If possible we can determine the sex of the baby.

You’ll also receive a scan report and printouts of your baby’s scan.

Who performs the scan at Manchester Fertility?

Our caring, highly experienced sonographers Anne and Becky perform all of early pregnancy scans and reassurance scans at our welcoming, state-of-the-art fertility clinic in Cheadle.

What is the process for early pregnancy scans and reassurance scans?

We want you to be as comfortable as possible during your early pregnancy scan. The process for early pregnancy scans and reassurance scans will differ slightly depending on which scan you are having.

  • If you are under 10 weeks pregnant, you will have a trans-vaginal early pregnancy scan. There’s no need to have a full bladder for this scan.
  • From 10 weeks onwards, you will have a reassurance scan on your tummy. You will be asked to attend with a full bladder for this scan.
  • For both scans, please bring your green NHS notes with you or your midwife’s contact details, if available.

After you’ve had the scan, Anne or Becky will give you a paper printout of the scan report, along with some scan pictures of your baby.

FAQs on early pregnancy scans

Can my partner come with me for the scan?

Yes, you are welcome to bring one other person along to your scan.

Is there someone I can talk to about the outcome of my scan?

Our friendly, expert team of sonographers – Anne and Becky will talk you through the outcome of your scan and answer any questions you may have.

Do you offer any other early pregnancy treatments?

We also offer non-invasive prenatal chromosome testing (NIPT), which tests for conditions like Down’s Syndrome. Available to women from 10 weeks pregnant, NIPT involves analysing a sample of your blood to identify the risk of chromosome conditions to your baby.

As well as testing for Down’s, NIPT can identify risk levels for other chromosome conditions like Turner’s Syndrome and Edwards Syndrome. A NIPT blood test can be carried out following your early pregnancy scan. Find out more about NIPT here.

Do we do gender scans?

As part of the Reassurance Scan if we can scan you at 16-17+ weeks and if it is possible to see the sex of your baby the sonographer will let you know.

Do we do 3D or 4D scans?

No we do not currently have that facility.
