Considering IVF at 45 years old

Dear Professor Brian, I recently turned 45 years old and have been trying to conceive for almost 3 years. I have miscarried twice in that time. My husband is 35 years old and already has a child. I have had various tests and everything is okay. We are now thinking of going down the IVF route, but I read the success rates are so low with my own eggs due to quantity left and their quality. I am not happy to use donor eggs, so was wondering if there is any point starting the IVF treatment? I would really appreciate your frank and direct response.

I am sorry to hear about your difficulties in trying to conceive.  Unfortunately your age is the major factor in your lack of success.  Although there are reports of women having children in their late 40’s, at Manchester Fertility Services we have not had a live birth in anyone over the age of 44.  I understand that you are not happy using donated eggs but this would give you the best chance to conceive.  I would not advise you to have IVF using your own eggs but would suggest that you have some professional counselling at a fertility unit to explore your feelings and help you make the best decision on the future.
