Do you want to have a baby through donor sperm insemination? Although it may seem like a simple procedure, your treatment is carefully planned and tailored by your fertility consultant to ensure you have the maximum chance of pregnancy from your cycle, with the full support of our team at every stage:

Donor Sperm Insemination: Is it the right option for you?

The first step is for us to firstly ensure that you are fertile and that there are no issues that could prevent the donor sperm reaching your egg through insemination. We carry out thorough initial tests to check your fertility, including the number of eggs you have remaining and an ultrasound scan to check your uterus and ovaries. Your consultant may also recommend a fallopian tube patency test (HyCoSy).

Donor Sperm Insemination: Natural or Stimulated cycle

For donor sperm insemination to be successful, your egg has to be mature and ready to be fertilised at precisely the time of the insemination procedure. We do this through either a Natural Cycle or Stimulated Cycle. Natural Cycle involves monitoring when you naturally ovulate, with insemination carefully timed for when your egg is released. Stimulated Cycle may be recommended if you have irregular ovulation. You’ll be given a dose of fertility medication tailored to you, to ensure you have a mature egg ready to be fertilised.

Quality donor sperm

Only men with the highest quality sperm are accepted as sperm donors at Manchester Fertility. Men must be aged 18 to 41, and pass strict health criteria in addition to having quality sperm that can withstand the freezing/thawing and treatment processes.

You’ll be matched with a choice of at least two sperm donors which fit your criteria from our sperm donor bank, with the support of our Dedicated Donation Team and their knowledge and insight of our donors, to help you with your selection process.

It may also be possible for you to reserve sperm for future use once you have a confirmed clinical pregnancy, if you wish to have a sibling for your child using the same sperm donor.

Donor Sperm Insemination: Discounted cycles

Although some women achieve pregnancy from their first cycle, others may need more than one attempt. To make private donor sperm insemination as cost-effective as possible whilst giving you multiple attempts at treatment, we have created a specific, pre-paid Donor Sperm Insemination package that gives you up to three cycles of insemination at one, fixed discounted rate.

Post-treatment support

After insemination in our clinic, you’re given post-treatment instructions by our nursing team. You’ll be able to take a pregnancy test approximately two weeks after insemination, but in the meantime you’re supported by our Fertility Support Midwife, Lynsey Moorhead.

We understand that it can be an anxious time for you whilst you wait to take a pregnancy test, so she is here to reassure you. If your pregnancy test is positive, you’ll see Lynsey for your confirmation pregnancy scan at our clinic at around seven weeks pregnancy, she will also arrange for your care going forward to be seamlessly transferred to your local NHS unit.

Success Rates: Donor Sperm Insemination

IVF with donor sperm typically has a higher success rate, but when comparing one cycle of IVF with a course of donor sperm inseminations the results are often not dissimilar. Our 2015 pregnancy rates were almost 20% for women aged under 35 who had a course of Natural Cycle Donor Sperm Insemination.

It’s important to remember that success rates for donor sperm insemination are influenced by a number of factors, including your medical history, response to any previous treatment and your age – and therefore the quality of your eggs - at the time of insemination.

Your Manchester Fertility consultant will always advise the course of treatment that gives you the highest chance of success.
