Egg and Embryo Donation

Egg and Embryo Donation

Egg Donation

Egg donation is an act of outstanding altruism - the process involves great commitment by the donor.  Egg donors are scarce and we can offer this service if the couple are able to identify a woman who is able to donate directly to them or on their behalf.

Egg donation is necessary when a woman fails to respond to stimulation, her ovaries are absent or have ceased to function or she is a known carrier of a serious genetic disorder.

Egg donors are healthy female volunteers under 35 years of age who have been screened for infections including syphilis, gonorrhoea, cytomegalovirus, hepatitis and HIV and for cystic fibrosis. The donated eggs are fertilised with your partner's semen and the resulting embryos transferred into your uterus in either a natural or hormone replacement cycle.

The donor and her partner must both attend counselling and medical consultations.

Embryo Donation

From time to time embryos become available from couples who have been successfully treated at our unit.

The prospective donors are screened in accordance with the British Fertility Society guidelines.  The embryos will have been frozen and may be transferred in a natural or hormone controlled cycle.  Prospective recipients must receive appropriate counselling and will, in law, be the legal parents of any child born.
