Manchester Fertility Services actively recruits sperm donors and is one of the largest and most successful donor sperm banks in the United Kingdom
Treatment by donor insemination (DI) is recommended when the male partner has no sperm or a very low sperm count or where there is a high probability of passing on a genetic abnormality. The procedure is also used for single females and same sex couples who are seeking a pregnancy. Donor sperm can be used in treatment with intrauterine insemination or for IVF.
In women with regular menstrual cycles we usually recommend insemination in an unstimulated cycle and time the insemination by reference to the woman's mid cycle ovulatory surge.
In women with irregular or infrequent cycles, the ovaries are stimulated with clomiphene or low dose gonadotrophins.
All our sperm donors are carefully chosen healthy men between the ages of 18 to 40 and are screened for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, cytomegalovirus and other sexually transmitted diseases. Where possible, a choice of donor characteristics will be offered.
Until recently, sperm donation in the UK was anonymous. In April 2005, new legislation came into effect which allows people conceived with donor sperm to find out who the donor was once they reach the age of eighteen. All our donors have agreed for their identity to be made available in the future to their genetic offspring via the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
