    Fertility in your 40s

Fertility and pregnancy in women over 40 has been in the media again recently, with case studies of women in this age group who had fallen pregnant naturally and questioning whether age is truly the defining factor when it comes to fertility. Are older women spending money needlessly on IVF?

It was a confusing message – on the one hand were a one or two women featured, who had no trouble getting pregnant at 40 and above. But on the other hand, there were women in the same article who had ...

New test could help identify best treatment for male infertility

Fertility scientists have developed a new test that could help identify DNA-damaged sperm in cases of male infertility.

The new ‘SpermComet’ test closely analyses the genetic material of the sperm, so if there is DNA damage to the sperm couples can be advised of the best treatment that will most likely result in pregnancy.

Here at Manchester Fertility Services, around a third of all cases we treat are due to issues with the male partner – whether it’s because of low spe...

Fertility treatment abroad - what's the real cost?

A recent survey by Infertility Network UK has revealed the reasons why some couples decide to go abroad for fertility treatment.

The top three reasons were shorter waiting times, cost of treatment compared to the UK and perceived higher success rates at foreign clinics.

But is this really the case? If you’re using a private infertility clinic like Manchester Fertility Services, there’s no waiting lists for treatments such as IVF, ICSI and also treatment using donor sperm, because w...

Has your NHS Trust cut IVF funding? Why not be an egg-sharer?

With NHS Primary Care Trusts cutting funding for IVF across the UK, more infertile couples than ever are left with the only option of going private if they need fertility treatment.

Some couples will now get no NHS-funded IVF cycles at all, whilst others will have to put all their hopes on only one ‘free’ IVF cycle instead of the three cycles which NICE recommends.

If you’re affected, you may be wondering what options are open to you now. Private fertility treatment isn&rsquo...

Egg-freezing in a flash - the new technique

Would you ever freeze your eggs? You may be wondering why you would want to. But plenty of women from Manchester and across the North West have contacted us about this treatment.

Egg-freezing can be done for medical reasons – because you’re about to go through treatment which could affect your fertility, such as chemotherapy – or social reasons, because you aren’t ready for children but want to know that when the time comes, your eggs will still be good enough to achieve...

IVF Babies - Greater Risk of Defects?

There has been much coverage across the media today about a new study which apparently shows that IVF babies are ‘twice as likely’ than naturally conceived babies to have malformations and defects.

Behind these sensationalised headlines, the study conducted by scientists in France found there was a small increased risk to babies born through assisted conception.

Just over 4% of the 15,000 children they studied, who had all been born as a result of treatment in fertility centres, ha...

Male Infertility - a ticking timebomb?

Male infertility is a ‘ticking timebomb’ according to latest reports. With one in five men cited as having fertility problems, scientists now believe that there should be more focus and research on why male infertility is becoming so common. A professor from the University of Copenhagen described the problem ‘as important as global warming’, and amongst other areas scientists are now looking into the possibility that a mother’s diet whilst pregnant can affect the future fertility of an...

Need Donor Sperm? It's better from the UK

I’ve recently seen a patient who was considering donor sperm insemination. Before coming to us, they had been to see an alternative infertility clinic which imports all their donor sperm from the European Sperm Bank. And who foots the bill for shipping it over? You do, the patient...

Embryo Freezing and Frozen Embryo Transfer - What it means and Why it's done?

Embryo freezing is an option if you’re undergoing IVF and wish to have more children in the future. It gives you the chance to give your child a biological sibling – known as a conceptual twin – in future years, without the need to go through the whole IVF process again. As such it avoids repeated ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, sperm donation and fertilisation...
